Procurement should begin with the result the buyer needs, not with a generic request for biochar. A fit-for-purpose specification makes supplier comparison clearer and reduces the risk of buying a material that is certified but unsuitable for the application.

1. Define the use case

Describe the host material or system, operating conditions, dose or replacement rate, handling constraints and performance objective. For soil, include soil and crop context. For adsorption, identify the target contaminant and water chemistry. For construction, define the formulation and required performance.

2. Translate the use into properties

Separate essential thresholds from preferred characteristics. A short, justified list is more useful than requesting every available laboratory test. Include batch consistency and physical form where storage, dosing or processing may be affected.

3. Request comparable evidence

Ask suppliers for methods, dates, laboratories, batch identifiers and sampling information alongside the result itself. Certificates can establish important baselines, while application-specific evidence answers whether the material is suitable for your particular use.

4. Validate before scale-up

Screen the most promising candidates, then test them in a representative laboratory or pilot setup. Scale-up should retain acceptance criteria and quality-control checks so that later batches remain aligned with the material originally evaluated.
